Happy Diwali!

First day at work like any other first day at work - not sure where to go, what to do or even who is who, too much information to handle and remember. The key people were in and out and mainly out, due to a millenium goals annual screening day and partly due to the starting holiday season. Got to meet most of my team from my office, briefed on security and other relevant issues and had a nice relaxing afternoon with my boss over some coffee and chocklate cake. Finally left the premises with a load of information packages, forms, my personal VHF radio, t-shirt and badges!

After some horrifying taxi experiences, decided to walk back to the hotel with the children and of course we got lost after ten minutes. Getting lost means finding something new and what we came across was an oasis of tranquility in the midst of Kathamandu noise, dust and dirt. Little A made friends with one of the waiters who joined us in a card game and eventually demanded us to join his family tomorrow for the festivities that were about to begin. When O said we can't unfortunately do that because we need (!) to swim, he announced he was heart-broken. Oh dear.
Got directions to the hotel and off we went again. And got lost again. Had to, eventually to resort to another scary taxi, with a driver who drew out a joint as we hopped on, making the drive even scarier.

Tired of the days experiences, still of the travel and of late afternoon swimming in the hotel pool we spent the first night of Diwali, the festival of light, in the hotel garden and in our room, watching fireworks, candles and millions of coloured ligths in the valley. Until the electricity was cut of, dimming the surrounding areas to near blackness. Drawing an assumption from the continuing happy noises through the dark, the festival of light did not suffer at all from the lack of light.

  1. Are you sure you made the right turn in Delhi? You seem to be lost so often :-)
